With the growing number of cases of heart attacks among the youth, especially between the ages of 25-45 years in India and the U.S., a standard test is needed to measure the health of the body’s most important life-pumping organ. ECG stands for Electrocardiogram. This is a routinely done test when you are admitted to a hospital to record the electrical signals that are given out by your heart. This is done to diagnose the health of your heart.
Through ECG we can diagnose various cardiovascular issues like,
The functioning of an ECG is pretty simple, with recording the electrical signals sent out by the heart and does not involve the patient receiving any electrical shocks in the process. When these tests are done for the elderly or the bed-confined patient’s care must be taken that the bedside assistants and homecare nurses are trained to measure and detect any such deviations observed in an ECG result.
With heart attacks and cardiac arrests increasing due to one’s unhealthy lifestyle and one’s body’s limits, we should be careful and take timely tests and periodic diagnoses to ensure the proper health of our main life pumping organ. Further, rather than just diagnosing issues like possibilities like organ failure or heart attack, an ECG also measures unusually fast heart rates i.e., tachycardia, or unusually slow heart rates i.e., bradycardia.
Many devices have been invented to ensure this test can be done on our own or when we are on the go in the east a subtle manner, such as smartphones and smartwatches, which have features and sensors in them that can read and record these electrical signals that our heart releases periodically.
Many people’s lives have been saved due to wearing such devices at all times, as most of these devices notify an ambulance and your family members whenever a deviation or any major diagnosis is detected, these cases have been recorded and posted across news outlets showcasing the growing importance of such devices.
Similarly, ECG tests are done in many ways, like resting ECG is done in hospitals or at doctors’ check rooms and takes around 2-4 minutes. Likewise running ECG is usually done to check the athletic ability of
athletes or interested patients, here even blood pressure is also recorded and this gives an extensive observation on a person’s athletic ability and their limits.
One should be careful to not get confused with the term Echocardiogram which is also abbreviated as ECG and is a complete scan of the heart. This echocardiogram involves a graphic display of the heart’s movement and its chambers and involves using ultrasound waves through which the pumping action of the heart is detected.
